Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds: Which Is Right for Your Bangle?

An honest, jeweller's-eye comparison. Identical chemistry, very different stories — and a clear answer on which suits a bangle.

Few questions arrive in our atelier more often than this one. The honest answer is that both are real diamonds — and the right choice has very little to do with which is 'better' and almost everything to do with what you want the piece to mean.

They are chemically identical

Lab-grown and mined diamonds are both pure crystalline carbon, with the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), the same refractive index (2.42), the same fire and brilliance. A trained gemmologist cannot tell them apart by eye — only specialist equipment reading minute trace elements can certify origin. The GIA grades them on the same 4Cs scale.

How they differ — honestly

Origin and time

Natural diamonds form 150–200 km below the earth's surface across one to three billion years. Lab-grown diamonds are produced in HPHT or CVD reactors over six to ten weeks. Same end molecule, profoundly different journey.

Price

A 1-carat lab-grown diamond of D-VVS quality typically costs 60–80% less than its mined equivalent. This means a larger stone, a higher clarity grade, or a more elaborate setting for the same investment.

Ethics and traceability

Lab-grown diamonds avoid mining altogether — no displaced communities, no land disturbance, far lower carbon footprint when grown using renewable energy. Natural diamonds, when sourced through Kimberley-compliant and traceable channels (which all of ours are), support legitimate economies in Botswana, Namibia and Canada.

Resale and provenance

Natural diamonds retain meaningful resale value across generations. Lab-grown values have softened year-over-year as production scales — they should be bought to be worn, not invested in.

Our recommendation, by use

  • For everyday wear and stacking — lab-grown. Larger stones at lower cost, identical sparkle.

  • For an heirloom-grade single piece — natural, by appointment.

  • For a first serious piece — either is honourable; choose the story you'd most like to tell.

Both are real. Both are beautiful. Choose the one whose story sits most naturally on your wrist.

Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Will anyone be able to tell my diamond is lab-grown?

No. Even master jewellers cannot distinguish lab-grown from natural diamonds without specialist equipment. The only person who knows is you.

Do lab-grown diamonds come with certificates?

Yes. We supply IGI or GIA certification with every lab-grown diamond, grading the stone on cut, colour, clarity and carat — exactly as for natural stones.

Are lab-grown diamonds as durable?

Identically. Both are 10 on the Mohs scale — the hardest natural substance known. They will outlast the bangle they sit in by centuries.
