10k, 14k or 18k? How to Choose the Karat of Your Bangle

Colour, durability, price, care. A complete jeweller's guide to the three karats we offer — and which one suits your wrist

Karat is simply the proportion of pure gold in an alloy, measured out of 24. Pure gold (24k) is too soft for jewellery you intend to wear daily — it will mark and bend. Every wearable bangle is therefore alloyed. The question is how much.

10k gold — 41.7% pure

The most durable, most affordable solid gold. Excellent for those with active lives. Slightly cooler in tone — the alloy reads almost rose against fair skin. Hallmarked '417'.

14k gold — 58.5% pure

Our most-asked-for bangle metal, and the international standard for fine jewellery. Warm yellow gold tone, excellent durability, holds setting integrity beautifully. Hallmarked '585'. The right answer for most wearers.

18k gold — 75% pure

The richest yellow tone — what most people picture when they imagine 'gold'. Slightly softer, requiring more thoughtful wear. The traditional choice for European fine jewellery. Hallmarked '750'.

Which karat for which wearer
  1. Daily wear, active hands, gym and travel — 10k or 14k.

  2. A piece worn often but considered, the kind you remove for sleep — 14k.

  3. An heirloom statement, worn for occasions or by those careful with their hands — 18k.

Pure gold is for vaults. Real gold — the kind you wear — is always alloyed.

Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Is 18k gold worth the extra cost over 14k?

Visually, the difference is a richer yellow tone. Practically, 14k is more durable. We recommend 18k for evening pieces and 14k for everyday wear.

Will 10k gold tarnish?

Solid 10k gold does not tarnish in the way silver does. It may dull from skin oils — a soft cloth restores its lustre in seconds.

Which karat is best for sensitive skin?

Higher karats contain less alloy, so 18k is gentlest on reactive skin. 14k is well tolerated by the vast majority of wearers.
